TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Wichita State women's team dropped its first Missouri Valley Conference match in nearly two years Friday in a 4-2 loss at Indiana State. Freshman Laryssa Ferreira notched the Shockers' only win in the dual match.
Wichita State got off to a good start, winning the doubles point by taking two of three matches from the Sycamores. WSU's Anna Egorova and Lenore Lazaroiu defeated Indiana State's Fadzai Masiyazi and Sarah Meghoufel 8-5 in the No. 2 match, while Florentina Hanisch and Torrie Browning followed suit with an 8-3 win over Marie Caujolle and Valeriia Petrovych in the No. 3. match. The Shockers dropped the No. 1 match as Stephanie Dalmacio and Laryssa Ferreira dropped an 8-6 decision to the Sycamore tandem of Jennifer Migan and Joanne Schickerling.
The singles competition belonged to the Sycamores. Jennifer Migan defeated WSU's Stephanie Dalmacio, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in the No. 1 match, while Indiana State's Sarah Meghoufel defeated Florentina Hanisch, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 match. The Sycamore rally continued in the No. 3 match as Joanne Schickerling dispatched Anna Egorova 6-4, 6-0, while Indiana State's Valeriia Petrovych downed Lenore Lazaroiu in a three-set No. 4 match, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0.
Laryssa Ferreira's win was the lone Shocker highlight in singles play. The freshman from Brazil cruised past Indiana State's Marie Caujolle, 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 6 match. The No. 5 match between WSU's Torrie Browning and Fadzai Masiyazi was unfinished.
The loss snaps a Missouri Valley Conference Shocker winning streak that dates back to the 2006 season when they dropped a conference match to Indiana State in Terre Haute. The Shockers will travel to Peoria, Ill., Friday night in preparation for Saturday's 1 p.m. match with Bradley which will be played at The Clubs at River City.
