SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Junior Kate Schaake won the women's shot put and
Justin Cole took the title in the men's 400 meters, while Kyle Becker and Jennifer Snyder met regional qualifications to help lead the Shockers
at the 2008 Nike ELITE Meet hosted by Sacramento State University.
Schaake took the top spot in the shot put with a toss of 46 feet, 6 1/4 inches to lead a solid day for the Shockers in the field events. She also placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 149-8. In the women's pole vault, Brooke Demo placed fifth in her first competition of the season, vaulting 12-3 1/2.
Also in the field events, Erika Kovesi and Karolina Mosa placed sixth and eighth, respectively, in the triple jump. Kovesi leaped 39-0 1/4, while Mosa's distance covered 37-8 1/2.
The Shocker women also had five individual finishes in the top eight at the meet. Senior Jennifer Snyder continued her strong strong year in her first competition since the Missouri Valley Indoor Conference Championships. She placed third in the 100m hurdles (13.91) and sixth in the 200m (24.90).
In the women's 1500m, senior Mica Land and sophomore Olivia Martinez each shattered their career bests. Land placed fourth in the race with a time of 4:31.60. Her time also marked the fourth fastest time in Wichita State history. Meanwhile, Martinez finished eighth in the race, breaking her personal best by more than 10 seconds with a time of 4:37.78.
Freshman Kiara Moore ran her fastest time of the season in the 400m. She finished seventh in the race with a time of 58.08.
On the men's side, Cole, who used his redshirt during the indoor season, held off Long Beach State's Kelsey Caesar by just four hundredths of a second to win the 400m with a time of 48.11. Cole was also the anchor leg on the winning 4x400m relay team (3:12.12) for the Shockers, along with Chris Dickman, Keith Blanding, and Jared Foley.
In the men's distance events, Scott Reed placed second in the 5000m (14:51.51) and Arturs Lazdekalns placed third in the 1500m (3:56.45). Lazdekalns' time was also a career best by more than three seconds.
Freshman Cooper Hanning also turned in a solid day in the hurdle events. He placed seventh in both the 110m hurdles (15.03) and 400m hurdles (55.71).
Becker, one week after he met regional standards in the hammer throw, launched a javelin throw of 217-7 to qualify in a second event for the NCAA Midwest Regional meet. He finished third at the meet, while teammate Brett Trudo, who met regional standards in the javelin last week, finished fifth with a toss of 207-5.
Also in the field, DePaul Brewer placed fourth in the shot put (51-4 1/4), Josh Crawford placed fifth in the triple jump (44-6 1/4), and Bryan Tapia placed sixth in the discus (164-9).
The Shockers will be back in action next week at the Emporia State Relays on Saturday, April 5 on the campus of Emporia State University.
