WICHITA, Kan. -- The #69 Wichita State women's tennis team dropped its first home match of the season Friday night, as the #43 Boise State Broncos downed the Shockers 5-2 in Day 1 of the Shocker Classic at Coleman Tennis Complex.
Boise State jumped out to an early advantage, taking two of three doubles matches from the Shockers for a 1-0 lead. The Bronco's No. 1 team of Pichittra Thongdach and Polina Kokoulina defeated WSU's Stephanie Dalmacio and Laryssa Ferreira in an 8-4 decision, while BSU's Bianca Jochimsen and Klaudia Wlodarczyk defeated Torrie Browning and Florentina Hanisch 9-7 in the No. 3 doubles match.
The Shockers' only doubles win came in the No. 2 match when Anna Egorova and Lenore Lazaroiu defeated Laura Baum and Jana Mackova in an 8-1 decision.
The singles competition was highlighted by two matches which were decided in third set tiebreakers, both of which ended in the Broncos' favor, and both of which played vital roles in determining the match. In the No. 3 match, BSU's Jochimsen defeated Hanisch 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), while Boise State's Housley took the No. 6 match from WSU's Ferreira in a 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 contest.
In the No. 1 match, BSU's Thongdach defeated Dalmacio 6-2, 6-0, while WSU's Egorova won the No. 2 match over Kokoulina in another three-set decision, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Boise State's Wlodarczyk defeated Lazaroiu in the No. 4 match, 6-0, 6-2, while WSU's Browning downed Machova in a 6-4, 6-1 decision at the No. 5 position.
The loss evens the Shockers' record at 4-4. They will take on North Florida at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
