SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- Three singles and one doubles team advanced in Friday's action at the ITA Women's Central Region Championship at the Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The premier match of the tournament may well have included Shocker Freshman Lutfiana Budiharto, who found herself taking on Oklahoma's Ana Maria Costantinescu, a finalist in last year's Central Region Championship. Budiharto took an early advantage, winning the first set 7-6, but Constantinescu rallied back to win the next two sets, 6-3, 7-5, and took the match in a three-set decision.
Budiharto is still alive in the tournament, having teamed with Anna Egorova to defeat the Utah doubles team of Jane Kryuchkova and Leigh Walsh, 8-3, in the doubles draw.
Meanwhile, Florentina Hanisch, Torrie Browning, and Laryssa Ferreira were making a lot of noise in the consolation bracket. Hanisch opened consolation play with an easy no-show win over Oklahoma State's Maryna Tkachenko, then defeated Utah's Julie Tukuafu in straight sets, 7-6 (3), 6-2, to advance in the consolation bracket.
Browning opened her run through the consolation bracket with a straight set, 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Utah's Leigh Walsh. The senior then defeated Tulsa's Thalia Barriga in a 6-4, 6-2 decision to remain alive in consolation play.
Ferreira followed suit with a sweep of consolation matches in Friday's action. The sophomore defeated Northern Colorado's Tabatha Knop, 6-4, 6-1, before downing Oklahoma's Maria Kalashnikova in a 6-0, 7-6 decision.
Play resumes Saturday morning. Results will be posted on goshockers.com as they become available.
