OMAHA, Neb. -- Junior Torrie Browning will represent Wichita State in the Flight 1 Singles Championship match when play resumes Sunday at the MVC Individual Championships in Omaha, Neb.
Browning earned her berth in the championship match by defeating Illinois State's Veronique Parke-Bedard 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 in Saturday's semifinal match. Her opponent in the championship match will be Indiana State's Jennifer Migan, who defeated Northern Iowa's Meghana Paritala 6-0, 6-1 in semifinal play.
In doubles play, Browning and Olga Elkin were defeated 9-7 by Kanade/Moraes in the Flight 1 Doubles semifinal match. The Shocker duo will face Parke-Bedard/Miller from Illinois State in Sunday's third place match. Play is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. Sunday.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Shocker women's squad was in action at the ITA All-American Championships Prequalifying tournament in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Stephanie Dalmacio, Florentina Hansich and Lenore Lazaroiu represented Wichita State in singles play. Anna Egorova joined Dalmacio for doubles play.
The Shockers came up empty in singles play against some of the best players in the nation. Dalmacio fell to Illinois' Megan Fudge 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (0) while Hanisch was defeated by San Diego's Monica Wiesener 7-5, 7-5. Lazaroiu came up short against Georgia Tech's Maya Johansson 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The only Wichita State win of the day came from Hanisch/Lazaroiu in doubles action. The Shocker tandem defeated Loyola Marymount's Mesterova/Tanner 8-6 to stay alive in the prestigious event. They will face Georgia Tech's McDowell/Krupina at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Dalmacio/Egorova fell 8-6 to Kentucky's Escamila/Woestmann in the tournament's opening round.
