Box Score

WICHITA, Kan.- No. 25 Cal State Fullerton (30-18) took game one of a three-game series with Wichita State (42-15), 6-2, in front of 5,108 fans at Eck Stadium on Friday night.

The Titans out-hit the Shockers 12-6, and Cal State Fullerton tagged starter Travis Banwart (8-4) with five earned runs. The junior gave up six hits and a walk in 6.1 innings while striking out seven.

Wes Roemer (8-5) got the win for CSF, giving up two earned runs on six hits and two walks in 6.2 innings with eight strikeouts. Adam Jorgenson came in with the tying run at the plate and stifled the Shockers' rally, earning his seventh save of the season. Jorgenson struck out four and held WSU hitless over the last 2.1 innings.

The Titans jumped ahead early after back-to-back singles from Josh Fellhauer and Nick Mahin. Johns Curtis grounded to third base, but the only play was at first, allowing Fellhauer to score.

Curtis then led off the fourth with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Khris Davis. Another sacrifice, this time a fly ball to center field by Evan McArthur, plated the Titans second run.

Joe Scott, led the Titans offensively, ending the night 3-for-4 with two runs. The sophomore shortstop started his charge with a double to left field in the top of the fifth. A line drive to shallow center field by lead-off man Clark Hardman brought in the run.

With one out in the seventh, three consecutive hits, a double sandwiched between two singles, added two more runs for CSF giving the Titans a 5-0 advantage. Jared Simon then relieved Banwart and got a double-play ball from Mahin to limit the damage.

The Shockers finally broke through on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the frame. With two down due to strikeouts, Conor Gillaspie singled up the middle and Josh Workman followed with a walk. Tyler Hill then singled to shallow left-center, driving in WSU's first run. Tyler Weber kept it going with a double down the left field line that plated Workman. Runners remained at second and third as Jorgenson came in, but the junior right-hander struck out the third Shocker that inning to end the threat.

Cal State Fullerton got one back in the top of the eighth when Matt Wallach singled in Curtis, who had started the inning with his second lead-off double of the night.

Workman went 2-for-2 for Wichita State with two walks and a run.

The two teams meet again Saturday at 2 p.m. and wrap up the three-game non-conference series at 1 p.m.
