Shocks Split on Final Day in Norman

Shocks Split on Final Day in Norman

3/4/2007 1:00:00 AM

NORMAN, Okla. - No. 6/7 Oklahoma (23-0) got four runs on six hits, which was more than enough offense for Sooner starter Lauren Eckermann, who froze the Shocker bats en route to a 4-0 win over Wichita State (8-13), Sunday afternoon in the final game of the 2007 OU/Residence Inn Tournament. WSU defeated Temple (0-8), 9-2, in an earlier game.

The Shockers are next in action when they travel to Columbia, Mo., Wednesday for a 2 p.m., doubleheader with Missouri. WSU opens its home schedule next weekend with the Shocker Invitational.

No. 6/7 Oklahoma 4, Shockers 0
The Sooners got on the board first opening the game with a run in the top of the first without the aid of a hit. Norrelle Dickson walked, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and later scored when Amber Flores lifted a ball to center to bring home Dickson on the fly ball, giving OU a 1-0 lead before the Shockers stepped to the plate.

Pitchers dominated the game in the early going as both Margo Pruis and OU's Lauren Eckermann did not allow any hits through the first three innings. Oklahoma got its first hit in the fourth and it was a big one as right-fielder Jamie Fox blasted a solo shot to left to give the Sooners a 2-0 lead.

Two-out walks continued to haunt the Shockers, as one delievered to Savannah Long brought home the third Oklahoma run of the day when second-baseman Traci Dickenson doubled to bring Long home to give OU a 3-0 lead.

OU tacked on another run in the sixth, but just one run was enough for the Sooners, as Eckermann no-hit the Shockers for the first time since Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Sarah Pauly did the same to the Shockers in the first game of the 2005 season. Eckermann struck out six in the effort.

Shockers 9, Temple 2
The Wichita State softball team (8-12) used an eight-run first to cruise past Temple (0-7), 9-2, in the first game of action on the final day of the 2007 Residence Inn Tournament in Norman.

The Shockers batted around in the first and used five hits, including extra-base knocks by freshman Elissa Zeches and senior Lisa Jones, that led to WSU's best offensive inning of the year to this point. Jones' two-out three-RBI triple helped keep the inning alive before Britnee Barnett struck out to end the offensive explosion 12 batters after it began.

WSU was aided by Temple mistakes, as the winless Owls continued their struggles in the field, having played less than half the games this season than the other two teams in the tournament.

Temple chipped away at the lead with two runs in the third, but WSU added another run in the fifth to claim the win.

Starter Ashly Bright (2-6) picked up her second career victory in a Shocker uniform, working the complete game, giving up just two runs on four hits while walking four and striking out 11. Barnett, Stephanie De La Riva and Kara L'Huillier each had multiple hits, while Zeches and L'Huillier each drove in two runs while Jones plated three.
