ST. LOUIS - The Wichita State cross country teams, led by women's coach of the year Marc Burns, and women's athlete of the year
Kellyn Johnson, were represented at the Missouri Valley Conference championships with four all-MVC performances, and three MVC scholar-athlete awards.
Burns was named MVC women's coach of the year after leading the Shocker women to their third-straight Valley championship title. It was the second title of Burns' two-year career, after taking over the program in August of 2006.
Johnson, a junior, earned MVC women's athlete of the year for her dominating performace at the MVC championships. She defeated the competition by nearly 21 seconds to become the first Shocker to win the MVC individual title since Desiraye Osburn in 2005.
Also earning all-MVC honors were senior
Mica Land and sophomore
Olivia Martinez. Land finished third, while Martinez finished 10th, a nine-place improvement over 2006. The all-conference honors marked the third time in Land's career after finishing sixth in 2005 and 2006.
Land also lead a trio of Shockers named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete team. Martinez and
Scott Reed, who finished 18th in the men's race earned the honor as well. A student-athlete must finish in the top 20 at the conference meet and maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
