PEORIA, Ill. - Kellyn Johnson won her second meet of the season, leading the Shocker women to a second-place team finish, while Scott Reed placed 13th to help the men to sixth place at the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill.
Johnson won the women's 6K by 12 seconds over Northern Iowa's Traci Hawley with a time of 20:44. The Sussex, Wis., native also won the JK Gold Classic earlier this season.
“Kellyn (Johnson) looked really strong today,” WSU Head Coach Marc Burns said. “She had a great race.”
Mica Land also placed in the top five for the Shockers, finishing fourth with a time of 21:16, while Chelsie Baldwin placed 13th (21:43). Baldwin's finish was her highest of the season.
“Overall it was a big step forward for us today,” Burns said. “Mica (Land) and Chelsie (Baldwin) got back to where they need to be heading into the MVC.”
As a team, the Shocker women finished just nine points behind the University of Missouri with a total of 58 points. The Shocks beat Missouri Valley Conference foes Illinois State (4th), Northern Iowa (5th), Southern Illinois (6th), Indiana State (7th), Drake (8th), and Bradley (14th).
On the men's side, Scott Reed led the Shocks with a 13th-place finish with an 8K time of 25:16. Reed's time was a season-best. Nick Nowak was the next finisher for the Shockers in 30th place with a time of 25:44, Tad Eisenhauer came in 47th (25:59) and Sam Chege finished 50th (26:02). Freshman Brandon Haist made the biggest improvement, knocking more than 50 seconds off his previous career best with a time of 26:08 to finish 57th.
“Scott Reed had a strong effort today even though he wasn't feeling great,” Burns said. “(Nick) Nowak and (Sam) Chege both bounced back really well today, back to where they belong. Brandon Haist made big jump up for us today, too.”
The Shocker men placed sixth out of 15 teams, beating MVC opponents, Bradley and Northern Iowa.
The Shocks will have a week off to prepare for The Valley championships on Oct. 27 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
