Shockers wrap up play at 2006 Gopher Invitational

The Wichita State women's tennis team finished play at the 2006 Gopher Invitational, hosted by University of Minnesota, on Sunday, Sept. 17.? The Shockers won all three of its doubles matches.

Jackie Richey and Torrie Browning finished their bracket in third place after their win over Nebraska's Cicmanec/Finnegan, 8-4.?

"Overall this was an excellent way to begin the season,” said Director of Tennis Chris Young.? “I am most proud of the competitive spirit of this team and the way they battled against great competition.”

Anna Egorova and Olga Elkin then competed against Abayan/Knight from Air Force.? The WSU duo won the match up, 9-8.

Florentina Hanisch teamed up with Stephanie Dalmacio to take on Dunham/Svetlic from Missouri, where they won, 8-4.

“Our three freshman all advanced to the semifinals with Stephanie making a final, so it was a great way for them to begin their careers,” added Young.

Dalmacio fell in her championship match up against Tijana Koprivica from Minnesota, 6-4, 6-1.? She took second place in her bracket for singles.

Elkin won her match to take third place in her singles bracket.? She defeated Liz Corrao from Boston, 6-1, 6-2.

Browning competed against Maria Ring from Nebraska, where she lost, 7-6, 6-3.

Egorova lost in her match up against Danielle Mousseau from Minnesota, 6-3, 6-4.

Richey won the consolation bracket by defeating Aschley Jurgella from UWGB, 6-3, 12-10.

Hanisch fell in her match for third place in her bracket against Milia Veselinovic, 6-2, 6-3.

“Our returning girls are more confident following last season's success, so I am looking forward to the MVC Individuals and a great season,” said Young.

The Shockers will now prepare for the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championship in Omaha, Neb. on Sept. 29th through Oct. 1st.
