Box Score The No. 17 Wichita State men's basketball team remained undefeated on the season with a 85-55 win over UMKC (3-4).
Junior P.J. Couisnard led four Shockers in double-figures with 16 points. Sean Ogirri connected three times from behind the arc en route to 15 points while Phil Thomasson and Ryan Martin finished with 12 points and 10 points, respectively. Thomasson recorded his first double-double of the year by pulling down 10 rebounds, five of which were on the offensive end.
Quinton Day led the Kangaroos with 19 points and was joined by Brent Stephens in double-figures with 15 points.
Playing its first home game as a nationally ranked team since 1983, WSU came out slow and struggled with the UMKC zone defense. Ogirri broke the ice for the Shockers with a three-pointer at the 16:39 mark. Thomasson went on a personal 6-0 run, capped by a thunderous dunk, to put WSU up 12-9 with nine minutes to play in the half.
UMKC made enough shots and defensive stops to hang around, answering every time the Shockers started to gain momentum. Day scored the last four points of the half to pull the Kangaroos within three, 27-24, at the half.
The UMKC defense held WSU to just 40 percent shooting in the half. WSU was able to stay ahead by hitting four three-pointers to just two from the Kangaroos.
The Shockers came out with an increased defensive intensity that spurred a 17-4 run to start the second half. Ryan Martin scored five straight to start the run. WSU began to press, forcing three straight turnovers that Kyle Wilson, Matt Braeuer and Ogirri turned into layups in a 17 second span.
WSU never looked back and maintained defensive pressure throughout the half. A three-point play by Ryan Bradley with 1:21 left put the Shockers up 85-50, giving WSU its biggest lead of the game.
The Shockers shot 66 percent from the field in the second half, while holding UMKC to just 38 percent. Couisnard and Braeuer led the team with four assists each as WSU piled up 21 assists on 30 baskets.
WSU will next be in action Saturday as the team travels to Syracuse, N.Y., to take on the No. 14 ranked Syracuse Orange. The game begins at 6 p.m. central, and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
