Alexander Breaks Long Jump School Record at Arkansas Spring Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Wichita State senior Jelese Alexander broke the Shockers' 16-year-old school record to win the long jump Saturday at the Arkansas Spring Invitational at John McDonnell Field.
 
Alexander beat her previous personal best mark on every single jump she took in the competition, improving to 6.37m/20'10.75" on her final attempt. The senior from Bon Accord, Trinidad and Tobago broke Wichita State's long jump record, previously set by La'Taish Brown in 2010, by one centimeter, moving up to No. 2 in the American Conference. After winning the long jump, Alexander went over to high jump and recorded a conference-leading clearance of 1.83m/6'0" to place second and move up to No. 3 all-time in Wichita State history. Her high jump mark currently ranks No. 9 in the nation, while her long jump mark ranks 14th.
 
Josh Parrish led the Shocker men to a 1-2-3 long jump sweep, jumping a conference lead of 7.85m/25'59.25" on his first attempt. Travon Williams placed second with a personal-best and conference No. 2 mark of 7.67m/25'2", and Darius Graham took third with a personal-best jump of 7.48m/24'6.5".
 
Seven other Shockers claimed event wins at the Arkansas Spring Invitational. Jason Parrish ran a conference lead in the 400-meter hurdles, winning the event with a season-best time of 50.58.
 
Tyler Carroll won the 110-meter hurdles with his second-straight personal-best time, running 13.87, the sixth-fastest time in program history.
 
Also on the track, Kelvin Kipyego won the 800 meters with a time of 1:51.47, Greyson Ellensohn won the 3,000 meters win 8:22.41, and Austin Carrera won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:07.78.
 
In the field events, Liam Miller won the pole vault with a clearance of 5.00m/16'4.75", and Eli Johnson threw 52.64m/172'8" to win the discus.
 
Chairo Ogbebor recorded another fast time in the 100-meter dash, running 10.23 to take second, and Kaleb Tesmer cleared a conference lead of 2.11m/6'11" in the high jump to place second.
 
Zakilya Zeigler recorded the No. 9 time in program history in the 400 meters, running 55.24 to finish eighth.
 
The Shockers return to action April 16-18 for the Bryan Clay Invitational and the Oregon Team Invitational.
