MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis scored seven runs over the first three innings and held Wichita State to just five hits, evening the series with an 11-1 win on Saturday afternoon at FedExPark.
Â
Kyle Mabie ended the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with a two-run double, activating the 10-run rule.
Â
The Tigers (8-17, 2-3) scratched across a run in the first on a sacrifice fly but struck the first decisive blow with four two-out runs in the second. After a dropped third strike with two outs prolonged the frame, Trae Cassidy hit a check-swing bloop down the left field line that dropped in for a two-run double. James Smith IV followed with a two-run single of his own, extending the lead to 5-0 against WSU starter
Brady Hamilton (3-4).
Â
Hamilton ended up striking up four hitters in the second inning because of the dropped third strike.
Â
Memphis poured in two more in the third on RBI singles from Tyler Harrington and Javon Hernandez, pushing the margin to 7-0.
Â
The Shockers (18-10, 3-2) were unable to muster much offense against Memphis starter David Case (2-5), who blanked the WSU bats through five innings. Wichita State got their lone run in the sixth when
Jacob Gutierrez plated
Jayson Jones with a sacrifice fly.
Â
Jones extended his season-best hitting streak to 19 games with a first inning single, one of his two hits on the day as the only Shocker to record a multi-hit game.
Â
Seth Garner worked the final two innings out of the Memphis bullpen, retiring all six Wichita State hitters he faced.
