Memphis Evens Series

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis scored seven runs over the first three innings and held Wichita State to just five hits, evening the series with an 11-1 win on Saturday afternoon at FedExPark.

Kyle Mabie ended the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with a two-run double, activating the 10-run rule.

The Tigers (8-17, 2-3) scratched across a run in the first on a sacrifice fly but struck the first decisive blow with four two-out runs in the second. After a dropped third strike with two outs prolonged the frame, Trae Cassidy hit a check-swing bloop down the left field line that dropped in for a two-run double. James Smith IV followed with a two-run single of his own, extending the lead to 5-0 against WSU starter Brady Hamilton (3-4).

Hamilton ended up striking up four hitters in the second inning because of the dropped third strike.

Memphis poured in two more in the third on RBI singles from Tyler Harrington and Javon Hernandez, pushing the margin to 7-0.

The Shockers (18-10, 3-2) were unable to muster much offense against Memphis starter David Case (2-5), who blanked the WSU bats through five innings. Wichita State got their lone run in the sixth when Jacob Gutierrez plated Jayson Jones with a sacrifice fly.

Jones extended his season-best hitting streak to 19 games with a first inning single, one of his two hits on the day as the only Shocker to record a multi-hit game.

Seth Garner worked the final two innings out of the Memphis bullpen, retiring all six Wichita State hitters he faced.
