Shockers Claim Series with Rubber Match Victory

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Wichita State snagged their second consecutive American Conference series win with a 7-3 victory over Memphis on Sunday afternoon at FedExPark.

The Shockers (19-10, 4-2) got strong relief appearances from Caleb Reed, Brady Owens and Brady Pacha, who combined for 6.1 innings after starter Johnny Nuanez recorded just eight outs, issuing three walks and hitting two batters before exiting in the third inning. The trio combined for nine strikeouts and allowed just two runs, both on solo homers.

Reed (4-0) picked up the victory, tossing 2.2 innings as the first man out of the bullpen with five strikeouts. Pacha recorded his fourth save by notching the final five outs.

Wichita State struck first in the second inning via a two-out RBI double from Alex Ulloa in the top of the second, scoring Jacob Gutierrez all the way from first on a close play at the plate.

An RBI single from Memphis first baseman Tyler Harrington in the bottom of the inning tied the game at 1-1, but Wichita State surged back in front with one run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Jack Quick launched his first Shocker homer leading off the fourth, then joined Jayson Jones with RBI singles in the fifth that stretched Wichita State's lead to 4-1.

That RBI single for Jones extended his hitting streak to 20 games.

Memphis (8-18, 2-4) got a solo shot from Freddy Rodriguez in the fifth and another from Shane Cox in the sixth but would get no closer as WSU punched back with a three-run seventh inning. Jones delivered a sacrifice fly and run-scoring singles from Owen Washburn and Jacob Gutierrez produced the final margin.

Tigers starter Seth Impson (1-1) took the loss, allowing four hits and four runs over 4.1 innings.

Wichita State is back in action on Tuesday morning against Washburn for Kids Day at the Ballpark. First pitch at Eck Stadium is scheduled for 11:05 am CT.
