Shockers Catch Fire in Second Half, Roll Past OSU in NIT Second Round

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State knocked down 14 three-pointers and outscored Oklahoma State by 19 after halftime, rolling to a 96-70 win in the second round of the NIT Sunday night in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

No. 3 Wichita State (24-11) advances to the NIT quarterfinals where they will meet No. 1 seed Tulsa Tuesday night at 6 p.m. on ESPN2. It will be the fourth meeting between the two schools this season.

Kenyon Giles added his 18th 20-point game behind a game-high 28 points on 8-of-16 three-pointers. His eight triples tied a career high. In total five Shockers reached double figures. Dillon Battie recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Karon Boyd and Michael Gray Jr. both chipped in 13 apiece and Dre Kindell added 11. TJ Williams grabbed 10 rebounds.

Wichita State shot 49.3 percent from the field, including 57.6 percent in the second half. The Shockers shot a season-best 53.8 percent from beyond the arc, converting 14-of-26 attempts, while Oklahoma State went 6-for-20.

Wichita State outrebounded the Cowboys by eight and had just seven turnovers to their 11.

Wichita State wasted no time getting on the board, scoring on its opening possession and jumping out to a quick 6-2 lead in the first two minutes. Oklahoma State answered with a short burst to tie the game, but the Shockers responded with a key 8-0 run, highlighted by a transition finish and a pair of perimeter jumpers, to take a 14-6 advantage.

The Cowboys briefly cut the margin to four midway through the half, but Wichita State seized control with one of the game's pivotal stretches. Leading 22-18, the Shockers strung together a 12-2 run over a four-minute span, forcing multiple turnovers and converting them into fast-break points. That sequence pushed the lead into double digits for the first time.

Oklahoma State showed signs of life late in the half, trimming the deficit to single digits with under four minutes to play, but Wichita State closed strong. A late three-pointer followed by a defensive stop and score in the final minute allowed the Shockers to carry a 44-37 lead into halftime.

Oklahoma State opened the second half scoring the first six points to immediately cut the margin to one. Not even three minutes in, the Cowboys grabbed their first lead of the night on a Christian Coleman driving layup.

A Williams answer put the Shockers back in front by a point and then Kanye Clary split two free throws, tying the game at 48 with 16:09 to go.

Wichita State quickly regained a six-point lead on a Giles triple and a Will Berg three-point play. After the Cowboys pulled back within three, Wichita State used a 9-0 run to pull ahead 63-51 at the 10:43 mark. The lead would only get larger behind a barrage of three-pointers from Giles, Kindell and Gray Jr.

The Shockers would lead by as many as 29 in the final minute, capped by a Henry Thengvall layup to put the cherry on top a dominant second half.
