HARAHAN, La. -- Wichita State suffered a pair of crushing defeats at the CUSA Championship, dropping 2-1 decisions to Youngstown State and Sacred Heart in matches that both went to a decisive seventh game of the best-of-seven.
The Shockers (73-33) will await their fate at the NCAA Selection Show on Wednesday, March 25 at 3:00 pm CT.
Wichita State's two matches at Colonial Lanes played out in an eerily similar fashion. Taking on defending NCAA champion Youngstown State in round one, the Shockers dropped the traditional point 1,044-985 to fall into a 1-0 hole in the best-of-three. WSU rallied in the Baker match, overcoming a 55-pin deficit after two games by taking games three, four and five (193-192, 239-198, 226-196) for a 1,060-1,043 win that forced the best-of-seven.
The Shockers took leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but the Penguins answered back by winning the fourth and fifth games for a 3-2 advantage. A 191-161 win for Wichita State in game six forced the winner-take-all, which Youngstown State claimed by the score of 226-190.
That loss sent Wichita State to the contender's bracket, where they faced off with Sacred Heart. Again, WSU dropped the traditional point, this time 1,025-960, to put the Shockers backs against the wall. A huge fifth game from Wichita State secured the win in the Baker point (195-155, 184-179, 204-211, 152-169, 227-154) by a 962-868 margin, leveling the match at 1-1 and sending the mega match to a best-of-seven. The Shockers lost two tight games on their way to a 3-0 deficit, then caught fire with wins of 203-167, 264-208 and 215-213. But a late surge from the Pioneers in game seven locked up a 225-212 win, knocking the Shockers out of the tournament.
Ashtyn Woods recorded Wichita State's best individual score of the competition with a 230 against Sacred Heart, while
Aleesha Oden paced the Shockers with a 222 in the defeat to Youngstown State.
