Letter From The AD: Investing In Shocker Basketball

3/12/2026 8:00:00 PM

Greetings from the student-athletes, coaches and staff at Wichita State University,

Wichita State University's history of championships is guided by investments in coaches and the resources they need for success, no matter the era.

Coach Paul Mills and the Shockers are making March meaningful again for Wichita State men's basketball. Fans proved it with four consecutive "largest attendances of the year," in our final four games at Charles Koch Arena.

Thank you for helping the Shockers reach this point. Your enthusiasm, contributions and attendance are crucial components.

We want March to feel like this every year - Koch Arena packed and fans excited about brackets. Reaching our goals requires great attendance and investment in student-athletes who, in the words of Paul Mills, love basketball and possess the talent and integrity to continue building his program.

Throughout the decades, our ability to provide top-level resources for our programs creates memorable moments and NCAA Tournament triumphs. Our community, at critical points, contributed to build, renovate and upgrade facilities and hire top coaches.

In the coming months, our basketball program needs money to recruit and retain top student-athletes.

Wichita State hired Paul Mills in 2023 with the intent to build sustained success.
  • The Shockers recorded their first 20-win season since 2019-20. The second-place finish in the American Conference is the highest since 2021's league title.
  • Paul has increased WSU's win total each season, much as he did during his six seasons at Oral Roberts. He coached the Golden Eagles into the Sweet 16 of the 2021 NCAA Tournament in his fourth season with wins over Ohio State and Florida. In 2023, ORU went 30-5 and returned to the NCAA Tournament.
  • Paul's 55 wins through three seasons rank third among all 27 coaches at WSU, through 119 seasons, and are the most since Eddie Fogler won 61 in his three seasons (1986-89).
Since January of 2023, privately funded NIL/Revenue Share resources to support men's basketball have grown 518% and Wichita State has developed a reputation of character and integrity in the NIL/Revenue Share environment.

Increased growth and investment in roster resources are planned for 2026-27.

Wichita State basketball is on the right track, thanks to your support and the efforts of our student-athletes and coaches.

Season ticket renewals start on March 24.

Donations to the We Fight For Wichita Fund will allow Shocker Athletics to maximize its revenue-sharing opportunities for student-athletes. Gifts can be given to either the general fund or to a specific sport program, but not to a specific student-athlete. Gifts to this fund are tax-deductible.

We need you to help us build on this season's success by renewing your tickets and helping us bring new fans to Koch Arena. Basketball attendance is critical to our efforts to recruit and retain talent and to support all 16 of our sport programs at a championship level.

In appreciation and partnership,
Kevin Saal Signature
