LAREDO, Texas – Wichita State's
Jose Miguel Ramirez posted the second-best individual round score in program history on his way to a runner-up finish, leading the Shockers to a fourth-place team result on Tuesday at the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club.
Â
The Shockers posted rounds of 300, 276, and 283 for an 859 (+7) team score to earn their fifth consecutive top-five finish. No. 50 Houston won the team title with an 850 (-2) team score. Houston's No. 76 Hudson Weibel earned the individual title with a 205 (-8) performance, edging Wichita State's Ramirez by two strokes.
Â
The Shockers struggled in the opening round, sitting in last place at 16-over-par.
Â
In the second round, led by Ramirez, Wichita State bounced back to shoot an 8-under par team score. Ramirez fired an 18-hole 63, tying the second-lowest single-round score in program history. His second-round performance vaulted him up 27 spots on the leaderboard into first place. He tied Ryan Spears (2006), Yannik Emmert (2017), and Brad Golden (2000) for second in Shocker history. Only Dustin Garza's 61 on Oct. 20, 2008, is lower.Â
Â
Additionally,
Michael Robson shot even par for the round, and
Caden Cox added a 1-under-par performance to help the Wichita State climb from last to sixth on the team leaderboard. The Shockers' 276 score was their second-best team round of the season.
Â
The final round did not begin well for Wichita State, as Ramirez triple-bogeyed his opening hole to fall out of first place.
Emilio Arellano Lamas helped steady the lineup, shooting 2-under for the round to push the Shockers to another top-five team finish. Ramirez recovered from the opening triple bogey to finish even par for the round and secure second place.
Jose Carletta joined Ramirez with an even-par finish for the round.
Â
Ramirez earned his third career top-five finish and second runner-up trophy.
