WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State saw an 18-point second-half lead slip away before falling in double overtime, 104-100, to Charlotte Saturday night at Halton Arena.
Wichita State (9-6, 1-1) placed four players in double figures and scored 100 points for the second time this season, but Charlotte (7-8, 1-1) used a late rally and clutch overtime shooting to secure the win in a back-and-forth contest that featured nine lead changes and seven ties.
The Shockers had won 29 straight games when scoring 100 points or more. The loss dropped Wichita State to 1-1 in OT games this season and 3-3 under
Paul Mills.
Kenyon Giles poured in a game and career-high 27 points, knocking down six three-pointers and adding three free throws, while
Karon Boyd recorded a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
TJ Williams chipped in 13 points and seven boards, and
Michael Gray Jr. finished with 12 points and four assists.
Will Berg added his team-leading fourth double-double behind 10 points and 11 boards.
Wichita State shot 48.0 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from three, while owning advantages in points in the paint (44-36) and second-chance points (30-24).
Wichita State came out firing, shooting 61.5 percent in the opening half and building a 41-36 lead at the break. Giles was unstoppable early, scoring 21 first-half points on 8-of-10 shooting and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. The Shockers led by as many as eight in the first half and closed the period with a basket from
Dillon Battie to maintain momentum heading into the locker room.
The Shockers opened the second half on an emphatic run, stretching the margin to 59-41 with 15:07 remaining behind aggressive defense and second-chance opportunities. Boyd and Williams controlled the glass during the stretch, while Gray Jr. and Giles continued to space the floor.
Charlotte responded with a steady comeback, using offensive rebounds and perimeter shooting to chip away. The 49ers cut the deficit to single digits midway through the half and eventually tied the game at 80-80 on a Damoni Harrison three-pointer with five seconds left, forcing overtime.
Both teams traded baskets in the first overtime, each scoring 11 points. Wichita State received key contributions from Boyd and Giles, but Charlotte answered with timely three-point shooting to extend the game into a second extra period.
In the second overtime, Charlotte connected on four three-pointers and went 8-of-10 at the free-throw line. After a three-point play from Boyd tied the game at 100 with 8 seconds left, Charlotte's Arden Conyers drove down and heaved a contested three-pointer with 1.3 seconds to go. Conyers' three splashed through the net, while also drawing a foul, sinking Wichita State's hopes. He completed the four-point play to complete the comeback.
