Shockers Sweep Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Wichita State improved to 2-0 in American play with a 3-0 win over Memphis (9-6, 1-1). The Shockers (10-4, 2-0) won by scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-22.

The 10-4 start to the season is the best since the 2017 team started 11-3.

Sydney Dunning led the Shockers with 13 kills, while Brooklyn Leggett added 12 kills. Jordan Heatherly had 26 assists and Gabi Maas finished with nine digs.

The Shockers took an early 7-1 lead in the first set, but the Tigers chipped away until they tied it at 15. The two teams traded points until a 5-0 run gave the Shockers a 24-18 lead. A McKenzie Jones kill won the set 25-19.

The second set went back and forth until a 3-0 run put WSU up 12-8. A Jones kill pushed the lead to 14-10 before the Tigers tied it at 18 on a block. With the score tied at 19, the Shockers used an Emerson Wilford kill and back-to-back blocks from Maddie Wilson and Jones to force a Memphis timeout. WSU scored three of the final four points for a 25-20 win.

A Maas service ace gave the Shockers an 11-5 advantage in the third set before the Tigers used a 4-0 run to pull within 13-11. Another Wilson/Jones block put WSU up 22-17 and the Shockers reached match point at 24-19 on a Memphis hitting error. The Shockers won the set 25-22 on a Dunning kill.
