COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Wichita State (4-2) earned its first sweep of the season with a 3-0 win over Radford (1-6) at the Golden Eagle Invitational. The Shockers won by scores of 25-17, 25-11 and 25-12.
Sydney Dunning led the Shockers with 15 kills and seven digs, while hitting .583.
Brooklyn Leggett added 11 kills, while
Emerson Wilford had 10.
Jordan Heatherly finished with 33 assists, five digs, three blocks and three kills, while
Gabi Maas had a match-high 12 digs.
WSU hit .409 as a team, while holding the Highlanders to a .053 hitting percentage.
The Shockers raced out to a 10-5 lead in the first set and pushed it to 17-6 after a block by Heatherly and
Maddie Wilson. The Highlanders responded with a 6-1 run to cut the lead to 18-12. Kills from Wilson, Heatherly and Wilford put the Shocks up 22-13 and a Dunning kill gave WSU the 25-17 win.
In set two, Heatherly served the Shockers to a quick 6-0 lead and increased it to 13-3 on a Leggett kill. WSU ran away with the set 25-11 and held Radford to a -.097 hitting percentage in the set.
The third set went back and forth until the Shockers used a kill and two service aces by Wilson to go in front 10-7. Leggett and Wilford, who both had five kills in the set, took over down the stretch as the Shockers won the set 25-12.
The Shockers are next in action at 6 p.m. CT tonight when they face Tennessee Tech.
