Shockers Land 7-Footer from Purdue

4/24/2025 1:30:00 PM

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State men's basketball added some much-needed size to its roster for 2025-26 with the addition of Will Berg from the transfer portal.

At 7-foot-2, Berg will be tied for the tallest student-athlete to put on a Shocker uniform in the fall, joining Ron Smith (1970-71). He is only the seventh 7-footer on record in program history. A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Berg will have two years of eligibility remaining after spending the previous three seasons at Purdue. Berg brings legitimate size as a mobile center who can make plays out of the post and stretch the floor out to the 3-point line. He redshirted his true freshman season in 2022-23 for the Boilermakers.

"Our staff was looking for an interior player who embraced physicality, could finish at the rim, rebound on both ends and execute perimeter actions with the guards on our roster," said Wichita State head men's basketball coach Paul Mills. "We believe we found a perfect fit in Will. Will has really developed the past couple of years while being at Purdue and everyone I spoke to has raved about his work ethic. He will be a force for the Shockers this upcoming season."

In two seasons as a reserve at Purdue, Berg appeared in 36 games over the last two seasons, making three starts. His first two years in West Lafayette, he gained prime experience going against two-time National Player of the Year Zach Edey every day in practice. As a redshirt sophomore, Berg played in 22 games and averaged 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds in just 6.1 minutes of playing time. He was 16-for-19 (84.2 percent) from the field. His 84.2 percent shooting from the field is the eighth-highest percentage in NCAA history for players with at least 15 field goal attempts. Through two seasons he has a career field goal percentage of 79.5 percent, the highest field goal percentage in NCAA history for anyone with at least 35 field goal attempts. Thirteen of his 31 career field goals are dunks. He set season highs in minutes (17), points (7) and rebounds (7) in a Nov. 8 win over Northern Kentucky. In 2023-24, he saw action in 14 games and posted 2.6 points and 1.9 rebounds per game, while helping the Boilermakers make it to the national title game, eventually falling to the defending champs UConn.

An under-the-radar recruit, Berg committed to the Boilermakers after turning down offers from Illinois and Utah State. Berg represented Sweden on the U16 and U18 National Teams, and competed in the U18 Nordic Championships. He is the son of Martin Berg.
