LAS VEGAS -- Wichita State's remarkable first NCAA season came to a heartbreaking end on Friday, as the Shockers were eliminated from the NCAA Championship with losses to Jacksonville State (2-1) and Nebraska (2-0) at Suncoast Lanes.
The Shockers end their inaugural NCAA campaign with an 87-38 record.
Wichita State got off to a hot start in their first round matchup against defending NCAA champion Jacksonville State. The Shockers claimed the traditional point, 1,052-1,018, as all five WSU players finished with scores of 200 or better (
Mary Orf 233,
Aleesha Oden 207, Sara Duque Jimenez 207,
Piper Reams 205,
Ashtyn Woods, 200). Wichita State put up another big number in the Baker match, but fell 1,074-1,034 to force the decisive best-of-seven Baker games. The Shockers inched in front 3-2 after taking a thrilling game five, but the Gamecocks claimed game six and then were able to have lane choice for game seven as the higher-seeded team. Jax State closed out the win with a 233-171 decision in the seventh game on the right lane, which went 7-0 during the match.
With their backs against the wall in the loser's bracket against #2 seed Nebraska, the Shockers dropped a 1,050-985 decision in the traditional game. Oden (235) and Reams (229) led the way for the Shockers, but an early Huskers lead proved too much to overcome. Wichita State again fell just short in the Baker match, rallying from a large deficit after three games to win the final two matchups but still dropping the match in total pinfall, 1,088-1,048.
Jacksonville State went on to defeat Youngstown State on the opposite side of the bracket and will face the winner of the Nebraska-Youngstown State rematch in the championship match on Saturday night.
