2/16/2025 4:55:00 PM

JONESBORO, Ark. -- Wichita State knocked off the #1, #2 and #3-ranked teams in the country on Sunday to win the 2025 Mid-Winter Invitational at Hijinx Family Entertainment Center.

The tournament win is Wichita State's second of the spring after claiming the Columbia 300 Saints Invite on February 2.

The Shockers (60-28) entered bracket play seeded fourth after an up-and-down first two days that saw Wichita State go 4-5. Facing off against the nation's #1 team in Nebraska to open the bracket, WSU took the first two games but dropped the next three to fall behind, 3-2. A 221-190 victory in game six sent the match to a decisive seventh game, where the Shockers hung on for a 209-199 win to advance. In round two, Wichita State blitzed #2 Vanderbilt from the start, rolling to the only sweep of the entire second round by scores of 224-194, 248-236, 226-213, 215-203 to earn a spot in the finals against defending NCAA champion Jacksonville State. In a rematch of the 2024 Intercollegiate Team Championships, the Shockers again emerged victorious, taking the first three games to establish control and rolling to a 4-1 win (213-202, 193-181, 225-219, 158-257, 205-182).

Wichita State got off to a slow start on Friday, falling to #8 Sam Houston and Jackson State to open the competition 0-2. The Shockers bounced back with four straight wins, besting #2 Vanderbilt, #13 McKendree, #4 Arkansas State and #17 UAB. In the win over the Blazers, WSU posted a score of 1,223, the third-highest traditional mark nationally this season. The Shockers dropped close decisions to #11 Louisiana Tech, #1 Nebraska and #14 Wisconsin-Whitewater to close out the day on Saturday, but still climbed to fourth in total pinfall to give themselves a shot at the title on Sunday.

Paige Wagner earned an All-Tournament spot and very nearly secured MVP honors, averaging 238.6 to land just eight pins behind Youngstown State's Jade Cote for the top spot on the podium. Wagner fired a 280 in the first traditional game and finished her Saturday with a 289. Sara Duque Jimenez narrowly missed out on All-Tournament, averaging 219.0, while Mary Orf logged a 211.4 average. Piper Reams averaged 195.4 with a high game of 239.

The Shockers are off to the Big Red Invite in Lincoln, Nebraska next weekend. The competition begins Friday, February 21 at Hollywood Bowl.
