WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State men's tennis team fell in heartbreaking fashion once again, falling 4-3 to the Boise State Broncos on Friday afternoon at Genesis Rock Road.
Boise State is now 5-1 this season. Wichita State has lost three matches in a row, all 4-3 decisions, and they are now 2-5 on the year.
In doubles, it would be the visiting Broncos taking the opening point, defeating Wichita State's
Alejandro Jacome and
Kristof Minarik, 6-2, at court one, and beating
Vanja Hodzic and
Amir Milushev, 7-5, at court two to take the opening point. WSU's
Luke Bracks and
Ilias Worthington earned a 6-3 win at court three for the Shockers, but it wasn't enough.
In singles, the Shockers set the tone with a pair of straight-set wins to take a 2-1 lead. Bracks earned a 6-4, 6-3 win at court four and Worthington won 6-3, 6-4 at court five to put the Shockers in front early in singles.
Soon after, Hodzic would lose a very close match at court one, 6-4, 7-6 (2), to tie the match at 2-2.
Heading to third sets on the remaining three courts, Milushev fell 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, giving the Broncos the lead back at 3-2.
The Shockers weren't done yet, as Minarik put together a fantastic comeback win at court two, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, to tie the match at 3-3, leaving Jacome to decide the match at court three.
Jacome started well in the third set, but Boise State came back to force a tiebreak that the Bronco would win, taking the match at line three, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (3), and clinching the 4-3 win for Boise State.
