Slow Start Sinks Shockers at Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. – A slow start on the road doomed the Wichita State women's tennis team as they fell to the Kansas Jayhawks 5-2 on Friday afternoon at Jayhawk Tennis Center.
 
Kansas is now 4-0 on the year with the win. Wichita State fell to 1-4 with the loss.
 
Doubles was back-and-forth early on, but KU would ultimately take the opening point with a pair of 6-3 wins on the doubles courts, beating Xin Tong Wang and Giorgia Roselli at court one, and Anne Knuettel and Sati Aubakirova at court three.
 
Despite the final score margin, singles was very competitive overall, with four matches being decided in third sets, but the Shockers were unable to capitalize on some scoring opportunities late to turn the tide fully.
 
Roselli fell first, losing at court one 6-2, 6-3. It was the first appearance for the sophomore at line one singles in her Shocker career.
 
Tatyana Nikolenko's first singles decision of her Shocker career was a 7-5, 6-2 loss at court six that extended the Jayhawk advantage to 3-0 in the match.
 
Kudryavtseva lost the first of four three-set bouts on the day, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-1, which gave KU the win and a 4-0 lead.
 
Playing the match out, Wang got the Shockers on the board with a come-from-behind, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 win at court two, but KU took down Knuettel 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 at court five to reextend their lead.
 
Chantava closed out a competitive 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-3 win at court four to end the match with a 5-2 score in favor of Kansas.
 
The Shockers travel to Manhattan, Kansas tomorrow to meet the hometown Kansas State Wildcats at noon Saturday at Body First Tennis Center.
