Bowlers Finish 6th at Northeast Classic

1/19/2025 1:35:00 PM

NEW CASTLE, Del. -- Wichita State rattled off 10 consecutive wins en route to a sixth-place finish at the loaded Northeast Classic hosted by Sacred Heart.

#3-ranked Nebraska defeated #4-ranked Youngstown State 4-0 to claim the team championship, while Merrimack's Cassidy Anshutz took home MVP honors with a 232.8 average.

The Shockers (33-18) kicked off the competition with a 4-1 showing in Friday's Baker games, highlighted by an 1142-986 win against #18 Maryland Eastern Shore. The only blemish on the day was a 1001-959 loss to host Sacred Heart, but Wichita State bounced back with three consecutive wins to end the day and then put together a flawless 5-0 Saturday in traditional matches. The Shockers toppled three ranked foes (#19 Merrimack, #21 UAB and #22 Delaware State) sandwiched around wins over Norfolk State and Long Island.

Sitting at 9-1 with 10,149 total pins through two days of competition, the Shockers were scheduled to be seeded ninth in Sunday's bracket play. Sam Houston and Vanderbilt, seeded fifth and eighth, respectively, elected to forego the final day due to the threat of inclement weather in the area. As a result, Wichita State was moved up to the seventh seed, where they squared off against #17 Mount St. Mary's. The Shockers emerged victorious in a 4-3 thriller, including a 276 team game in the fifth and a clutch 213-204 win in the seventh and deciding game.

WSU put together an excellent showing in the next round against #10 North Carolina A&T, racking up games of 234, 229, 228 and 216 to knock off the Aggies, 4-2, and advance to the 5th-6th place match against #6 Stephen F. Austin. The Shockers claimed the opening game but struggled down the stretch, failing to break 200 in each of the last four games as the Ladyjacks hung on for a 4-2 victory.

Freshman Morgan Kline led the Shockers with a 217.8 average in the traditional games, followed closely by sophomore Aleesha Oden (214.8). Junior Paige Wagner produced the top individual score of the day with a 269 in the victory over Long Island.

The Shockers are off next weekend before returning to tournament competition on January 31 with the Columbia 300 Saints Classic, hosted by Maryville in St. Louis, Missouri.
