WICHITA – Wichita State freshman
Josh Parrish recorded the fifth-best mark in the NCAA, jumping 7.94m/26'0.5" to win the long jump at the Friends Spring Open on Friday evening.
The freshman from Olathe, Kan. only recorded one fair mark in six jumps, but one was enough to claim the American Athletic Conference lead, the fifth-farthest mark in the nation this season, the third-best mark in Shocker history and the Friends Spring Open long jump win. The jump puts him in position to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminaries.
Chidera Okoro gave the Shockers the long jump sweep, winning the women's competition with an outdoor personal-best jump of 5.93m/19'5.5".
The Shocker women won the 4x800-meter relay as
Jenna Muma,
Lea Jerkovic,
Audrey Parson and
Farrah Miller broke the Wichita State record in the event with a time of 9:02.62.
Cesar Ramirez picked up another event win for the Shockers, winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:40.05. Freshman
Landen O'Neill finished third in his steeplechase debut, running 9:50.01.
In the pole vault,
Arantxa Cortez was the top collegiate finisher, placing second behind Wichita State pole vault coach, Aliyah Welter. Cortez cleared an outdoor personal best of 3.75m/12'3.75", and Welter jumped 4.30m/14'1.25".

Creighton Camp threw a personal-best 57.13m/187'5" to win the hammer throw, and
Karlynn Hornung recorded a personal-best 47.87m/157'1" to palce fourth in the women's hammer.
The Shockers return to Adair Austin Stadium Saturday for the final day of the Friends Spring Open, and three high jumps will compete at the Arkansas Spring Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
