Cortez Hits U23 South American Championships Auto Qualifier at K-State

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Wichita State pole vaulter Arantxa Cortez cleared 3.91m/12'10", hitting the auto qualifying mark for the U23 South American Championships Friday at R.V. Christian Track.
 
The sophomore transfer from Cowley was the top collegiate jumper, finishing in second behind Wichita State pole vault coach Aliyah Welter, who cleared 4.21m/13'9.75". Cortez, a Lima, Peru native, needed to get 3.90m to qualify for the championships and cleared 3.91m on first attempt. Her mark ranks seventh all time in Shocker history.
 
In the horizontal jumps, junior Chidera Okoro got the sweep, winning the triple jump with a personal-best jump of 12.39m/40'7.75" and taking the long jump crown with a leap of 5.88m/19'3.5". Freshman Josh Parrish also got a long jump win with a mark of 7.58m/24'8.5" before edging out senior Joseph Holthusen for the 110-meter hurdles win. The two have traded wins throughout the outdoor season, and this time Parrish prevailed with a time of 14.27 (+3.0w) with Holthusen finishing right behind him in 14.38 (+3.0w).

Freshman Kate Campos recorded her fourth sub-14 second 100-meter hurdles race of the season, finishing third in 13.92 (+4.0w). Campos went on to claim her second 400-meter hurdles win of the season, running a personal best time of 1:01.67. In the men's 400-meter hurdles, freshman Jason Parrish clocked the ninth-fastest time in Shocker history to finish second with a personal-best time of 51.77.
 
Junior Marissa Jensen and senior Brady Palen swept the high jump titles with Jensen clearing a season-best 1.75m/5'9" to win the women's competition and Palen matching his outdoor best of 2.20m/7'2.5" to win the men's competition and continue to hold the American Athletic Conference lead in the event.
 
In the discus, junior Kylie Zimmer threw a collegiate best of 42.44m/139'3" to place fifth.
 
In a windy 5,000-meter race, Zander Cobb took the win with a time of 15:02.76, and Erik Enriquez (15:07.27) and Aidan Reyna (15:17.12) finished second and third.
 
Redshirt-sophomore Riley Vandaveer ran a personal-best 1:53.59 to finish sixth in the men's 800 meters, and Farrah Miller finished in 2:10.84 to place fourth in the women's race.
 
The Shockers capped the night with a 4x400-meter relay sweep. The women's team of Sadie Millard, Elontae Hackney-Cooper, Farrah Miller and Ma'Liyah Anderson ran a season-best 3:48.95, and the men's team of Brendan Kerr, Jason Parrish, Bryan Haney and RJ Hutchison ran a season-best 3:14.85.
 
Wichita State will host its senior day meet Friday, May 3 before heading to the AAC Outdoor Championships May 10-12 in San Antonio, Texas.
