WICHITA, Kan. – After finishing tied for third in the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate on Tuesday, Wichita State men's golf senior
Blake Lorenz was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Wednesday afternoon.
Head Coach
Judd Easterling was excited to see Lorenz selected.
"He's ready to knock down the door and get it done," said Easterling. "He got off to a slow start on Monday morning in the cold weather but played really great in the last two rounds on Tuesday."
Lorenz earns the honor after carding a tournament score of 207, six strokes under-par, and finishing just one stroke off the leaders. Lorenz's tournament score was highlighted by a pair of 67 rounds in rounds two and three to power him to his third-place finish.
Lorenz is the fourth Shocker men's golfer to be named AAC Player of the Week, joining Marcus Wochner on March 24, 2021, and
Dawson Lewis and
Lucas Scheufler who both earned the honor on March 23, 2022.
"Blake is gaining some speed and some confidence going into the last couple of events," said Easterling. "He's played our next two golf courses quite a bit, so he'll be mentally prepared for those and he's definitely trending in the right direction."
Lorenz leads the Shockers in multiple categories this season, including birdies with 73, eagles with three, rounds in the 60s with five, and top-20 finishes with four.
Lorenz will look to keep the club hot on April 1, when the Shockers begin play in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, hosted at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona.
