Shockers Rout Little Rock, Clinch First Series Win

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Wichita State got six shutout innings from Daniel Zang and scored 12 runs against the Little Rock bullpen, routing the Trojans 14-0 on Saturday afternoon at Gary Hogan Field.

The Shockers (2-0) poured on 18 hits, doing most of their damage late. The Shockers scored multiple runs in each of the last four innings, highlighted by a six-run top of the seventh that blew the game open.

Zang (1-0) was spectacular in his Shocker debut, limiting the Trojans to just three singles over six spotless innings. The right-hander struck out eight and issued two walks, ending his outing by retiring the final nine batters he faced.

Nate Adler nailed down his first career save by closing out the win with three scoreless innings in relief, striking out a pair while allowing just one hit and one walk.

Wichita State scratched across a pair of runs to break a scoreless deadlock in the third inning, grabbing the lead on a wild pitch from Little Rock starter Hoss Brewer (0-1) and adding a second run via a Brayden Luikart RBI single. Camden Johnson doubled the advantage in the sixth with a two-run single, one of four hits for the freshman and two of his five RBI at the top of the order.

The Shockers turned the 4-0 lead into 10-0 with a six-spot in the seventh inning. Derek Williams, who came off the bench and recorded three hits, got the scoring started in the inning with a two-run double. Alex Birge made it 7-0 with an RBI single, followed by another Johnson two-run single that stretched the lead to 9-0. Ryan Callahan's RBI ground out plated the final run of the inning.

Johnson knocked in his fifth run of the game in the eighth on a fielder's choice grounder. A Little Rock throwing error scored a second run in the inning for a 12-0 lead.

Birge put a bow on the afternoon with a two-run single in the top of the ninth for the final margin.

Five Shockers finished with multi-hit games and four scored multiple runs in the winning effort.

The Shockers look for their first non-conference road sweep since 2018 in the series finale on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
