Shockers Clipped by Trojans in Finale

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Wichita State scored four runs over the first three innings but fell silent over the final six as Little Rock rallied for a 5-4 win to salvage the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Gary Hogan Field.

The Shockers (2-1) took leads in each of the first three innings at 1-0, 3-1, and 4-3 but were not able to hold on. Little Rock (1-2) tied the game at 4-4 in the fourth and took the lead for good with a run in the bottom of the fifth that proved to be the difference.

A double play grounder from Josh Livingston gave Wichita State a 1-0 lead in the first, a run that was answered by a solo home run from Luke Pectol in the bottom of the inning. Camden Johnson continued his torrid series with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the second for a 3-1 advantage, but a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a sacrifice fly from Alex Seguine on a great diving catch by Jordan Rogers tied the game at 3-3.

A wild pitch plated Ryan Callahan in the top of the third, inching the Shockers back in front, 4-3. Seguine knotted the score at 4-4 in the home half with an RBI double and Ty Rhoades plated what proved to be the winning run with a run-scoring grounder in the fifth.

The relief combination of Erik McKnight, Austin Stubber (1-0) and Jacob Weatherley held the Shockers off the board the rest of the way. The Shockers had at least one baserunner in every inning, but could not push across the tying run.

Starter Tommy LaPour worked the first 2.2 innings for the Shockers, allowing three runs while striking out two. The WSU bullpen was excellent, utilizing Drew Iverson, Brady Hamilton (0-1), Ryan Geraghty and Hunter Holmes to allow just one earned run over the final 5.1 innings. Hamilton was tagged with the loss, surrendering two runs, one earned, over two innings while striking out three.

Johnson led the Shockers with three hits while Callahan added a pair of singles to pace the Wichita State offense.

The Shockers are back in action next Friday at the Jax College Baseball Classic. First game of the tournament against Virginia is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
