JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Wichita State took a 3-2 lead into the eighth inning and a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the tenth but could not hold on as #14 Virginia rallied for a 5-4 win on Friday night at 121 Financial Ballpark.
The Shockers (2-2) were three outs away from a win after
Derek Williams launched a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the tenth against Virginia closer Aiden Teel (1-0). But the Cavaliers (5-0) rallied in the bottom of the inning, using a walk, single and hit by pitch to load the bases for Henry Ford, who doubled off the wall in right-center field to give Virginia the come-from-behind win.
The heartbreaking defeat spoiled a tremendous outing from Wichita State starter
Caden Favors, who worked a career-high 6.2 innings with seven strikeouts. The southpaw allowed eight hits and two runs, one earned.
Wichita State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, courtesy of a two-out RBI single from
Dayvin Johnson. A Virginia RBI knock in the fourth leveled the ledger, but WSU retook the advantage in the top of the fifth on a solo home run from
Darnell Parker Jr. and another two-out RBI single from
Ryan Callahan.
The lead was trimmed to 3-2 in the sixth on a RBI single from Bobby Whalen and Virginia tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth when Griff O'Ferrall played a run via a two-out throwing error.
Nate Adler stranded the bases loaded to escape the eighth and teamed with
Hunter Holmes to work a scoreless ninth to send the game to extras.
Holmes (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs over 1.0 inning of work.
The Shockers continue play at the Jacksonville College Classic on Saturday against Auburn. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 am CT.
