JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Auburn took advantage of 16 walks handed out by Wichita State pitchers to defeat Wichita State 19-8 on Saturday afternoon at 121 Financial Ballpark. The game was called after seven innings due to the tournament's 10-run rule.
Auburn (6-0) put up five runs in the first, two in the second, four in the third, four in the fourth and four more in the sixth against eight different Wichita State pitchers. The 16 walks issued by the Shockers match the second-most bases on balls in program history, tying the 16 walks against Oregon in 2011.
The Tigers and Shockers both ended the afternoon with 10 hits, but Auburn got a grand slam from Cooper McMurray in the first and a two-run homer in the second from Bobby Peirce to take a quick 7-0 lead that WSU could not overcome. The Shockers got to within 7-3 when
Dayvin Johnson launched a three-run homer in the bottom of the second, but the Tigers four-run third restored the cushion to 11-3.
Tommy LaPour (0-1) took the loss for Wichita State, allowing seven runs in 1.1 innings.
Mason Munz and
Peyton Walters turned in scoreless relief out of the Shocker bullpen, with Munz working 1.2 shutout frames and Walters 1.1 innings.
Auburn starter Joseph Gonzalez (2-0) earned the win, allowing two hits and three runs over 4.0 innings with two strikeouts and two walks.
Johnson paced the Shockers offensively by reaching in all four at-bats, going 3-for-3 with a walk.
Derek Williams reached base three times including a sixth inning RBI double, and
Gannon Snyder came off the bench to record his first two collegiate hits.
Lane Haworth also notched his first collegiate knock with an RBI single in the sixth.
Wichita State concludes the Jacksonville College Classic on Sunday afternoon against Iowa. First pitch against the Hawkeyes is scheduled for 11:00 am.
