Shockers Topple #18 Iowa

Jacksonville, Fla. – Wichita State used a trio of three-run home runs and a 12-run outburst against the Iowa bullpen to knock off the #18-ranked Hawkeyes 12-6 on Sunday afternoon at 121 Financial Ballpark in the final game of the Jacksonville College Baseball Classic.

The win improves Wichita State to 14-0 against Iowa in the all-time series, though a win in 2013 was later vacated by the NCAA.

The Shockers set a new school record by earning six hit by pitches in the game, including three HBPs for Ryan Callahan to match an individual school record.

The Shockers (3-3) trailed 5-0 into the top of the sixth and had been silenced by Iowa starter Cade Obermueller, who struck out six and allowed just three hits over five scoreless innings. The WSU rally began in the sixth when Derek Williams smacked a leadoff double and Seth Stroh was hit by a pitch with two outs. Josh Livingston came off the bench and promptly delivered a towering three-run homer that sliced the deficit to 5-3. Livingston's blast was the first pinch-hit home run for Wichita State since Mason O'Brien in 2018.

Wichita State took the lead in the seventh, again with Williams in the middle of the action. With Ryan Callahan at first and one out, Williams ripped a ground ball inside the bag at third and down the left field line. Callahan collided with Iowa shortstop Michael Seegers on his way around the bases and was awarded home plate on the obstruction, cutting the Iowa lead to 5-4. The Hawkeyes brought the infield in and Jaden Gustafson followed by chopping a ground ball into right field to plate Williams and tie the game at 5-5.

Iowa went to the bullpen for a left-hander to face Stroh, but the senior outfielder hooked a go-ahead, three-run shot just inside the right field foul pole to put WSU in front, 8-5.

Stroh helped preserve the newly found lead in the bottom of the inning. Iowa had already scored a run in the inning and had runners at second and third with one out. A shallow fly ball to right was run down by Stroh, who fired to the plate to cut down the tagging Kyle Huckstorf for an inning-ending double play.

Jordan Rogers capped off Wichita State's incredible late-inning surge with an opposite field, three-run homer in the top of the eighth to produce the final margin.

Brady Hamilton took it the rest of the way out of the Shocker bullpen to earn his first career save, allowing just one hit while striking out three over 2.2 scoreless innings. Ryan Geraghty (1-0) earned his first collegiate win by recording the final out of the sixth.

Jack Whitlock (1-2) took the loss for Iowa, allowing four runs in 0.2 innings.

The Shockers conclude their season-opening seven-game road swing with a midweek contest at Oral Roberts on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch from Tulsa is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
