Kenosha, Wis. -- Wichita State picked up six more ranked wins on the way to a sixth place finish at the SFA Ladyjack Classic at Sheridan Lanes.
Jacksonville State won the tournament with a 4-2 victory over Maryville, with Nebraska third, Youngstown State fourth and Vanderbilt rounding out the top five.
The Shockers (17-8) got off to a slow start on Friday in Baker play, ending the day 10th in total pinfall despite a 3-2 record. Following a 1093-912 loss to #5 Nebraska, WSU bounced back with 1097-837 win over (RV) Lewis, the highest pinfall for the Shockers in any match of the tournament. Wichita State dropped a 974-841 decision to #2 Arkansas State before following up with a 944-916 win over #22 Wisconsin-Whitewater and a 1060-990 victory against #3 Youngstown State, marking the second time this season the Shockers have defeated YSU after a win earlier this season at the Penguin Classic.
Wichita State jumped to sixth in pins following a strong showing in the traditional games on Saturday. A 985-908 win over #4 Vanderbilt opened the day, then WSU bested #9 and previously unbeaten Maryville, 1056-998. #21 McKendree defeated Wichita State, 1014-961, but the Shockers responded with two strong matches to close out the day. WSU posted a 1094 in their bye, then delivered the same score in a 1094-992 win over host #11 Stephen F. Austin.
WSU was paired with Vanderbilt in the opening round of bracket play, suffering a 4-2 (155-215, 265-221, 170-241, 219-169, 193-254)Â defeat. A 4-2 (189-184, 234-178, 195-245, 213-187, 190-215, 218-189) win over Stephen F. Austin gave the Shockers another chance at the Commodores in the final match of the competition, but Vanderbilt came away with a 4-0 (190-194, 191-253, 190-204, 181-216) victory to secure fifth place.
Sara Duque Jimenez was the top individual performer for Wichita State, notching a 214 average over her five traditional games for the ninth-best mark in the field.
Mary Orf was close behind in 12th place with a 213.2 average, followed by
Paige Wagner (15th - 211.2),
Ashtyn Woods (19th - 208.8) and
Piper Reams (39th - 190.8). Jacksonville State's Annalise O'Bryant took home the top individual honors with a 230.4 average.
The Shockers finish out the fall portion of the schedule this week at the Colonial Lanes Classic in Harahan, Louisiana, hosted by Tulane. The competition begins Friday, November 17 and concludes on Sunday, November 19.
