STRUTHERS, Ohio -- The Wichita State women's bowling team finished second out of 16 teams in their inaugural NCAA competition at the Penguin Classic.

The Shockers finished the tournament with a 10-3 record, with all three losses to teams ranked in the top five nationally. Wichita State notched five ranked wins along the way, highlighted by victories against #3 Youngstown State and #5 Nebraska. The Huskers defeated Wichita State in both the championship bracket opener and the final to claim the title.

Piper Reams (234.2 average) was named Tournament MVP as one of four Shockers on the All-Tournament Team. Reams was joined by Paige Wagner (3rd, 228.8), Aleesha Oden (4th, 223.6) and Ashtyn Woods (5th, 223.0).

Wichita State went 4-1 in Friday's Baker format to open the Penguin Classic. WSU bested Bryant in their first match, 951-837, before falling to host Youngstown State by the score of 1,157-992. The Shockers bounced back to win their final three matches of the day, taking down Central Missouri (1,030-896), #19 Valparaiso (1,098-1,018) and Roberts Wesleyan (972-841) to end the day ranked third in total pinfall.

The Shockers dominated in Saturday's traditional matches, going 5-0 with team scores of 1,050 or higher in all five matches. WSU opened the day with a 1,054-895 win over #21 McKendree, followed by a 1,098-884 victory against Lewis. That set up a showdown with #5 Nebraska, which the Shockers claimed with via a 1,213-1,158 scoreline, the most pins put down by WSU in the tournament. WSU followed up the big win by two more solid victories, rolling past Mercyhurst 1,050-902 and #10 Duquesne 1,136-1,059.

The spotless Saturday gave the Shockers the #2 seed in the championship bracket, where they squared off with the top-seeded Huskers in a best-of-seven Baker match. Nebraska defeated Wichita State 4.5-1.5, but WSU bounced back immediately with a 4-2 win over Youngstown State to clinch a spot in the finals. Nebraska secured the title via a 4-0 win in the championship match.

Wichita State finished second in the field with a 209 average, trailing only Nebraska at 214. Wagner and Woods tied for the top individual game at 256, with Wagner posting hers against Nebraska and Woods against Duquesne. Reams fired a 253 against Lewis and freshman Morgan Kline entered the lineup against Nebraska and delivered a 244.

The Shockers are back in action next weekend at the Mid-States Championships in Wichita. The action begins on Saturday, October 19 at Bowlero Northridge and concludes the following day.
