Montgomery, Palen Record NCAA Top-25 Marks in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. – Brady Palen and Jaleel Montgomery put up NCAA Top-25 performances to lead the Wichita State men to a second-place team finish, while the women placed third Saturday at the Mark Colligan Memorial in the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
 
Palen, the two-time high jump All-American from Beloit, Kan., cleared a season-best 2.15m/7'0.5" to win the event, tie for the American Athletic Conference lead, and move up to 21st in the NCAA. He has now jumped over 7 feet 14 times (indoor and outdoor) in his collegiate career.
 
On the track, Montgomery, a junior from Wichita, recorded back-to-back personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles, running 7.87 to win his prelim and then clocking a 7.79 in the final to win the event, move up to third all-time in Shocker history, take over the conference lead and move up to 22nd in the NCAA. Freshman Josh Parrish finished second in 7.96, his second time breaking the 8-second barrier in two meets. Adria Navajon finished fourth with a time of 8.19.
 
Kate Campos, another freshman hurdler, made her mark in the Wichita State record books, placing second in the 60-meter hurdles with the fourth-fastest time in school history, 8.45. Kenisa Meyer clocked a personal-best 8.75 to finish fourth.
 
Montgomery continued his personal-record breaking day with a second-place finish in the 200 meters, recording a time of 21.68 to claim a spot on WSU's top-10 all-time list at No. 9. Joakim Genereux finished fourth in 21.87.
 
Adam Rzentkowski picked up the Shockers' only other event win, taking the mile title with a time of 4:08.16.
 
Both the men's and women's 4x400-meter relays placed second with times that rank second in the AAC.  Trace Spires, RJ Hutchsion, JD Prinsloo and Joakim Genereux ran 3:16.79 and Farrah Miller, Sydney Brown, Elontae Hackney-Cooper and Sadie Millard ran 3:47.66.
 
Miller ran her first 800 meters of the season, finishing second in 2:11.78, and Brown ran a personal-best 56.47 in the open 400 meters to place third.
 
The Shockers return home for the three-day Wilson Invitational, named after Herm Wilson and Pat Wilson, starting Thursday, Jan. 25 in the Heskett Center.
