WICHITA, Kan. -- Senior opposite
Sophia Rohling was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll, the league announced Monday.
It is the fifth career weekly honor for Rohling and the first for a Wichita State player in the 2023 season.
Rohling was spectacular for the Shockers in wins over Illinois and Illinois State, leading Wichita State in kills in both matches. Against the Fighting Illini on Friday, the 6'3 opposite paced the Shockers with 14 terminations, adding a service ace and two block assists for a team-high 16.0 total points. Rohling had multiple kills in all five sets but was at her best in the deciding final frame, delivering a trio of kills on five swings without committing an attack error. She also provided a crucial touch on a swing from Illinois outside hitter Raina Terry that set the stage for
Natalie Foster's match-winning kill.
The following day against Illinois State, Rohling dominated on both sides of the ball to guide WSU to a convincing sweep of the Redbirds. The lefty finished with a match-best 10 kills on just 16 attempts with two errors, good for a .500 attack percentage. In the first set alone, Rohling piled up six kills on nine swings without committing a miscue. Defensively, she contributed a career-high seven digs and chipped in with three block assists, amassing 11.5 total points to match Foster for the most by any player in the match.
After missing the first match of the season due to injury, Rohling has helped the Shockers to three consecutive wins with 36 combined kills. The native of Thayer, Kansas is hitting .256 for the season and averaging 2.64 kills per set.
Rohling and the Shockers are back in action on Thursday to kick off the Shocker Volleyball Classic against #22-ranked Kansas. First serve from Charles Koch Arena is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
