Shockers Crush Temple in Three

WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State held another opponent to a sub-.100 hitting percentage and got a monster performance from Sophia Rohling in a comfortable 25-11, 25-13, 25-18 win over Temple on Friday night at Charles Koch Arena.

The Shockers (10-5, 4-1) were dominant in the first two sets, putting up staggering sideout percentages of 90% and 92%, respectively. Wichita State failed to side out just twice combined in the first two sets. Much of that efficiency was due to Rohling, who finished the night with a match-best 15 kills on a .522 hitting percentage, including five terminations on six attempts in the first set. WSU sprinted out to an 8-1 lead and never looked back, never letting Temple (11-5, 2-3) closer than eight points the rest of the way. Natalie Foster joined Rohling with five kills of her own on six swings, and Barbara Koehler's vicious top spin serve resulted in a pair of aces.

It was more of the same in the second stanza, as the Shockers lengthened out the lead to 9-4 thanks to a good run at the service line from Katie Galligan. WSU's effective serving kept Temple off balance for the duration of the set, forcing the Owls into eight attack errors and just seven kills (-.034 hitting percentage). A 4-0 spurt late in the frame put Temple's comeback hopes to bed, extending the advantage to 19-11 before another 4-0 run capped off a 25-13 set two victory.

The Owls hung around at the beginning of the third, pulling to within 9-8 on a kill from Taylor Davenport, but a decisive 7-0 Wichita State run eliminated any drama in the final set. Rohling capped off her excellent night with six more kills in the frame, and setter Izzi Strand contributed a pair of kills to help blunt potential Temple rallies. The Owls cut the deficit to four at 19-15, but a kill from Morgan Stout and another Koehler ace helped restore order down the stretch. Emerson Wilford came off the bench to tack on two late terminations, including the match winner as the Shockers picked up their fifth sweep of the season.

Wichita State finished the match hitting .329, aided by an efficient performances out of the middle from Foster (eight kills on 13 attempts, .538) and Stout (five kills on 10 attempts, .300). Strand finished with 31 assists and libero Gabi Maas racked up a match-high 13 digs. The Shockers had 6 aces to just 2 errors, while Temple did not record an ace and committed 10 miscues from behind the line.

WSU finishes the homestand on Sunday afternoon against South Florida. First serve from Charles Koch Arena is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
