WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State got four or more kills from six different players and used nine team blocks to fend off South Florida, 25-21, 25-16, 25-21 on Sunday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena.
The Shockers (11-5, 5-1) continued their dominance over South Florida, extending their winning streak to eight in a row against the Bulls. Seven of the eight victories have come in straight sets.
Wichita State kept South Florida (11-7, 5-2) at arm's length for much of the first set, taking the lead at 2-1 and holding it the rest of the way. WSU used a mini 5-2 burst in the middle of the set to extend the advantage to 16-11, a five-point margin that represented the Shockers largest lead of the stanza. USF made things interesting late, cutting the lead to 19-18 via a service ace from Maria Clara Andrade, but Wichita State scored the next three points for a 22-18 cushion. Two South Florida errors, one at the service line and the other on an attempt from Andrade, helped Wichita State claim the opener, 25-21. In a sign of things to come, WSU had five different players with multiple kills in the set, led by three from
Brylee Kelly.
After two South Florida aces opened the second set, the Shockers quickly regained control by scoring the next three points and once again did not surrender the lead. A 5-0 run swelled the lead from 15-12 to 20-12 late in the second, making for a comfortable 25-16 victory. Kelly turned in four more kills, including the set winner, and
Katie Galligan continued her run of strong serving efforts with two aces in the set.
The third set featured the most drama of the day, as the lead swung back and forth before reaching an 18-18 deadlock late. Kelly put the Shockers in front with another kill and two South Florida errors made it 21-18.
Morgan Stout made her presence felt with two huge blocks and a kill on the slide that pushed the lead to 22-19. A crucial setter dump from
Izzi Strand kept the margin at three, followed one point later by a Bulls service error to reach match point. After a long rally, South Florida's Buse Hazan missed long on a cross-court attempt, securing the sweep for Wichita State.
The Shockers hit .307 as a team compared to .130 for South Florida. Rohling paced the Shockers with nine kills, hitting .350; Kelly and Foster each added seven terminations and Stout contributed six on just 11 swings to go along with five block assists. Strand had 29 assists and 10 digs, a total matched by libero
Gabi Maas.
Hazan finished with a match-best 14 kills but committed 12 errors to finish with a .047 hitting percentage.
Wichita State hits the road for a pair of matches at Tulane. First serve of Friday's series opener in New Orleans is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
