Shockers Set for Ninth-Annual Sunflower Showdown

1/12/2023 7:36:00 PM

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Wichita State track and field team travels to Topeka where it will host the ninth-annual Kansas-Kansas State-Wichita State Triangular at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility Friday. Field events begin at 11 a.m. with running events hitting the track at 1:20 p.m.

STARTING LINES
> 11 men and 10 women are set to make their Shocker track and field debuts.
> Brady Palen is the lone indoor individual all-conference returner as he is set to open his high jump season as the top seed in the competition.
> Abeba Sullivan, Sarah Bertry, Adrian Diaz-Lopez, Clayton Duchatschek and Trey Rios will all compete in distance races after earning all-conference cross country honors in the fall. Diaz-Lopez and Duchatschek also were named All-Region in cross country.
> All-American 60-meter hurdler Joseph Holthusen makes his return to the track after red-shirting the outdoor season due to injury. Holthusen ran unattached at the Friends First Chance Qualifier a week ago, winning the prelims with an 8.09.
> Destiny Masters is slated to compete in the 60-meter hurdles, high jump and long jump. She's tied with K-State's Urte Bacianskaite for the best seed mark.

TRIANGULAR TIDBITS
> Kansas State has claimed the team title the past three years, with the Shockers recording their best finish in 2020 when they placed second with 221 points.
> For the first time, the meet will be held at a neutral site, taking advantage of Washburn's two-year old facility featuring a 200-meter banked track, the same type of surface the Shockers will compete on in six weeks at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
> Unlike most team competitions, the meet combines the teams scores of the men and women to determine the overall winner for the competition between the three Division I schools in Kansas.
> Each team is allowed a 26-athlete men's and 26-athlete women's competition roster, and only the top two athletes from each program can score in each event using the 7-5-4-3-2-1 scoring system.
