USF Hangs on to Defeat Wichita State in AAC Semifinals

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Wichita State's run in the American Athletic Conference Championship came to an end in the semifinals, dropping a 5-4 contest to South Florida Friday afternoon.

Wichita State (33-16) awaits its postseason fate with the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT.

Lauren Mills hit her third home run of the tournament, her lone at bat of the day. Sydney McKinney extended her hit streak to 15 with a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Zoe Jones was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Lauren Lucas, Wylie Glover and Cassie Passwaters all added a hit apiece.

Alison Cooper (8-3) made it only 2.0 innings in the start. She allowed two runs on three hits with a strikeout. Erin McDonald threw 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits. Caitlin Bingham was the most effective pitcher by far, throwing 2.2 innings of scoreless and hitless relief.

Facing one of the nation's best pitchers in Georgina Corrick, Wichita State finally had success against the two-time All-American. The nation's leader in strikeouts and wins, Corrick allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks. She struck out only five batters on the afternoon before being pulled after 5.1 innings.

Two batters into the game USF grabbed a quick 1-0 lead behind a leadoff triple and RBI groundout. Wichita State would respond in the bottom half behind a two-out single from Lucas and RBI double from Jones.

A leadoff home run in the top of the third put the Bulls back in front and signaled the end of Cooper's afternoon. USF would add one more in the third on a sacrifice fly to take a 3-1 lead.

The Bulls' second straight leadoff solo homer pushed the margin to 4-1 in the top of the fourth.

Both teams traded a run in the fifth to make it 5-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, Wichita State threatened a huge inning after Mills smoked a two-run, pinch-hit home run. Her 15th home run of the season cut the deficit to 5-4. The very next batter, Passwaters, drilled a pinch-hit double off the wall in right-center, signaling the end of the afternoon for Corrick in the circle.

Wichita State would have two runners on base with one out, but were unable to bring home the tying or go-ahead runs.

One last chance in the bottom of the seventh saw Wichita State go three-up, three-down after USF made two spectacular defensive plays.
