Polhill Powers Shockers to Top-Ten Finish

3/7/2022 5:33:00 PM

OPELIKA, Ala. – Brock Polhill battled his way to a team-best 12th place finish as Wichita State wrapped up the Tiger Invitational in a tie for 9th place at Grand National in Opelika.

Polhill (72-68-75—213, -1) carded a second round 68 for the best individual 18 of the tournament for Wichita State, notching five birdies in the round and ten overall. He paced a second round that saw all five Shocker golfers shoot 74 or better, surging into eighth place to begin the third round. WSU's 282 team total for the second round was the third best in the field, trailing only Auburn (281) and Florida Gulf Coast (275).

The Eagles from Florida Gulf Coast ran away with the team title, downing host Auburn by 13 strokes. FGCU finished the tournament -32, with the two Auburn squads checking in at -19 and -2. Southern Mississippi (-1) and UNCW (+6) rounded out the top five.

Dawson Lewis (75-69-75—219, +3) sandwiched a pair of 75s around a strong second round that featured just one bogey and four birdies. It was the third sub-70 round of the season for Lewis, joining a 67 and 69 at the Mark Simpson Invitational in late September.

Max Wojciechowski (72-74-75—221, +5) put together easily the best tournament of his collegiate career, posting his three lowest scores since joining the Shockers. The German also secured his first two career eagles, on the fourth hole in round one and the 12th hole in round three, both par-fives.

Joe Bultman (78-71-73—222, +6) also racked up an eagle of his own as part of a final round 73. Appearing in his first tournament since February of 2020, Bultman fired 11 birdies, highlighted by a stretch of three in four holes early in the second round. His second round 71 was just one off his career-best 18, set at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in the fall of 2019.

Michael Winslow (80-74-77—231, +15) finished in a tie for 78th in his first true collegiate tournament following match play action last weekend. The true freshman collected seven birdies for the tournament.

Frankie Capan III of Florida Gulf Coast took home the individual title, shooting 197 to best Auburn's Brendan Valdes by eight strokes.

The Shockers return to action March 21 at the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate in Springfield, Missouri.
