Shockers Head to Dallas for Three-Match Weekend

3/31/2022 2:18:00 PM

DALLAS, Texas – The Wichita State men's tennis team will travel to Dallas, Texas for three matches against American Athletic Conference opponents. The Shockers will play Friday, Saturday and Sunday against No. 37 Memphis, No. 31 SMU and Temple.

The Shockers are coming off a two-win weekend at home, claiming a 6-1 victory over the No. 1 junior college in the nation, Cowley County CC, and sweeping Northwest Missouri State 7-0.

Kristof Minarik and Luka Mrsic currently lead the team in singles with 11 wins apiece in dual matches, and Alex Richards and Nicolas Acevedo have also racked up double digits in the win column with 10 each. Minarik is 8-0 in matches outside of the No. 1 spot and has a 10-3 doubles record with partner Richards. Ray Lo is on a five-match winning streak, playing at courts four and five.

Last time Wichita State faced Memphis (10-4), the Shockers downed the Tigers, 4-3, in the American Athletic Conference tournament to advance to the semifinals. The Shockers return three players from that team, including Luka Mrsic who clinched the match last April. Memphis' Pablo Alemany Malea is currently undefeated in singles, playing mainly at court five, and the Tigers' duo of David Stevenson and Jeremy Taylor is ranked No. 18 in the nation with a 9-3 record at court one. Wichita State leads the all-time series, 4-2.

The Shockers beat SMU last spring, winning 4-1 at home. The Mustangs (12-6) are coming off a 4-3 win over No. 57 UCF last weekend and have won five of their eight matches against ranked opponents this season, highlighted by a 4-3 win over Texas A&M in February. Liam Krall leads the Mustangs in singles with a 12-3 record playing at courts one, two and three. The top line doubles pairing of Adam Neff and Ivan Thamma are currently ranked No. 76 in the nation with a 7-6 record. SMU leads the all-time series, 8-4.

Wichita State will cap the weekend with a dual with Temple (9-5), who has won four of their last five matches but has yet to pick up a win over a ranked opponent. This will be the first-ever matchup between the Shockers and the Owls.

Friday's match versus Memphis starts at 3 p.m., Saturday's SMU matchup begins at noon and the Sunday match against Temple kicks off at 11 a.m.
