BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Wichita State track and field team wrapped up day two of the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama.
Â
Adria Navajon highlighted the day with a victory in the heptathlon with 5616 points, recording personal bests in five of the seven events and setting championship records in the heptathlon high jump and long jump. He also placed seventh in the open 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.57.
Â
"Adria Navajon was tremendous," head coach
Steve Rainbolt said. "To win the heptathlon against his own extremely tough teammate,
Tanner Brown. was really good, but to add in scoring finishes in both the long jump and 60-meter hurdles made his weekend truly special."
Â
Brown's heptathlon score of 5512 points was also a personal best, earning him all-conference honors for his second-place finish.
Â
The Shocker men scored 115 points to place third as a team behind Houston (141.5) and Cincinnati (128).
Â
"I am extremely proud of our men's team," Rainbolt said. "Even though we have been second at this meet in the past, we finished closer to first as a team than we ever have before, and our men simply competed beautifully. We have a form chart before each of these conference championship meets, and we far out-performed our form chart, so I couldn't be happier with the men."
Â
Brady Palen and
Davis Dubbert earned all-conference honors in the high jump, placing second and third, and Palen cleared 2.14m/7-0.25 to join the seven-foot club. On the track,
Adam Moore picked up his second podium finish of the weekend with a second-place finish in the mile in a time of 4:04.77, and the Shockers' 4x400-meter relay team of
Joakim Genereux,
JD Prinsloo,
Tanner Brown and
RJ Hutchison earned all-conference honors by beating out Cincinnati for third.
Â
On the women's team,
Yazmine Wright led the way for the Shockers by scoring 16 points with her second-place finishes in the mile with a time of 4:45.45 and the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:35.95.
Amanda Kakoulias and
Destiny Masters tacked on a pair of fifth-place finishes in the shot put and high jump, respectively, and
Faith Turner ran a 7.57 in the 60-meter dash to earn a point for the team. The women finished with 31.5 points to place 10
th as a squad.
Â
"Our women's team finish was certainly far below where the ladies wanted to be, but the athletes were riddled with injuries, and we could easily see how we could have been fourth as a team and possibly third," Rainbolt said.
Â
Michael Bryan is the lone Shocker that is in position to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships in two weeks, while the rest of the team starts to prepare for the outdoor season, where they will be joined by the javelin squad.
Â
"I challenged both the men and the women to redouble the focus for the outdoor season and to catch a common vision for a strong championship effort in Wichita at the AAC Outdoor Championships in mid-May," Rainbolt said. "I am believing that the men can make a strong run at a team title in May and that the women can certainly be focused on achieving a top-three finish."
