BERTHOUD, Colo. – The Wichita State men's golf team seeks to build off a team title as they conclude the fall portion of the schedule with a trip to Denver for the TPC Colorado at Heron Lakes Intercollegiate.
Play begins on Monday, October 17 and runs through Wednesday, with 18 holes on the schedule each day.
The Shockers claimed the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational championship last week, surging past Utah Valley with six birdies over the final five holes to claim the program's first tournament win since the GCU Invitational in March of 2021. It was the third team win for head coach
Judd Easterling.
"To see the guys rebound, have pride and be competitive, it was nice to see the guys finish it off and come away with the victory," Easterling said. "The wind picked up, conditions got a little tough which was perfect for us, we made some good birdies and they (Utah Valley) struggled coming in."
The Shocker lineup features the same five from last time out at Crestview:
Aston Castillo,
Dawson Lewis,
Michael Winslow,
Blake Lorenz and
Matthew Sandoz.
Lucas Scheufler will compete as an individual.
Easterling was impressed with the performance of the freshman Sandoz, who fired a final round 70 to help the Shockers close out the win.
"Matthew came out there and made a lot of birdies. To have the game to step up in the final round as a freshman in his first event was awesome. He's having a little bit more fun, he's opening up a little bit, and now he's going to be on a flight and be on our lineup."
After playing Crestview at just 6,939 yards, the Shockers will be faced with their longest course of the season at TPC Colorado. Playing as a par-72, the course is listed at 8,001 yards.
"It's a long golf course at elevation, but we should be able to go there and compete," Easterling said. "The guys have got some confidence and our top five are playing really well right now."
The tournament features 10 teams, plus individuals from Colorado, Oklahoma State and Wyoming. Other participants are Air Force, Boise State, BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, St. Thomas, and Tarleton State.
