Antonio Norman Punches Ticket to NCAA Championships

5/29/2021 6:51:00 PM

COLLEGE STATION, Texas—Antonio Norman highlighted the final day of competition for the Shocker track and field programs at the West Regional on Saturday inside of E.B. Cushing Stadium.

"Michael Bryan and Antonio Norman will be terrific representatives for Wichita State Track and Field in Eugene, Oregon, at the NCAA finals in two weeks," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Steve Rainbolt. "Antonio's personal record race to advance to Eugene was absolutely spectacular.

"In addition, we had four days with lots of really outstanding performances by the Shockers, and we outperformed our team form chart significantly. It's tough to see our seniors graduate and move on. We are really losing some great ones from this class."

Norman blazed through the 110-meter hurdles. He threw down a time of 13.63 to finish third in his heat to earn an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Championships.

Norman's time of 13.63 is a personal best and tied him for No. 3 on the Shockers' outdoor performance list.

The Shocker hurdler is the second athlete to advance to the NCAA Championships. Michael Bryan advanced in the men's hammer throw on Wednesday.

In the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, Ethan Kossover ended his career on a high note. Kossover ran a personal best of 8:53.00 to finish 17th. He bested his old personal best by four seconds and beat his projection by 27 spots (projected 44th coming into the meet).

Zack Penrod also closed out his Shocker career on Saturday. He ran a time of 3:47.42 in the 1,500 meters to take 22nd overall. Penrod was a three-time conference champion and earned seven all-conference honors in his career.

One the women's side, Rebekah Topham also saw her Shocker career come to a close. Topham ran a time of 9:59.78 to finish 14th overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Topham will go down as one of the best in Shocker history. She was a four-time AAC MVP, an All-American in 2019, an 11-time conference champion and 20-time all-conference athete.

Nicole McMillen also closed out her Shocker career in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. She ran a time of 10:16.20 to take 20th. McMillen's time slots her at No. 3 in school history. She also outperformed her No. 39 projection by 19 spots.

Destiny Masters competed in the women's high jump and finished in a tie for 30th. The freshman cleared 1.72m/5-7.75, but didn't make the next height. Masters showed flashes of a bright future ahead in 2021. She finished second at the conference meet in the high jump.

Antonio Norman and Michael Bryan are the only two Shockers to move on to the NCAA Championships. Both Shockers will compete on June 9 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
