Shockers Claim Four All-Conference Honors on Day One of AAC Championships

5/14/2021 8:41:00 PM

TAMPA—The javelin crews highlighted competition at the AAC Outdoor Championships as the Wichita State track and field teams opened up the conference meet on Friday in Tampa at the USF Track and Field Stadium.

Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Steve Rainbolt said it was a long hot day, but felt that his team had a very nice first day.

"On the men's side, we had some very good things happen," Rainbolt said. "On the women's side, some normal ups and downs, but so far we are feeling good about the form chart. I'm very proud of our athletes and excited for the next two days of competition."

The men's javelin group combined for 33 team points, going 1-2-4-5-6-7-8-9.

Taran Taylor won the men's javelin with a toss of 68.04m/223-2. It is Taylor's first individual conference title and second all-conference honor. He took third in the men's javelin in 2018.

Davis Dubbert claimed all-conference honors, throwing the javelin 66.60m/218-6 to finish as the event's runner-up. It is Dubbert's first career all-conference honor.

Cauy Lindsay and Jeff Ast had big throws to finish in the top five. Chandler Stiawalt, Chonnor Ludolph and Aidan Camp finished the scoring for the Shockers. Brady Palen competed as well and took ninth.

In the women's javelin, Kourtni Hubert used her final throw to take third and earn all-conference honors. Her toss of 47.64m/156-3 is a personal best and puts her at No. 6 in school history.

It was Hubert's first appearance in the javelin at the conference meet, but is in her fourth year in Wichita. Hubert redshirted in 2018, dealt with injuries in 2019 and the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the 2020 meet.

Michael Bryan kicked off his postseason with all-conference honors. He finished as the runner-up in the men's hammer throw with a toss of 69.93m/229-5. Bryan was within one meter of the champion Ryan Davis out of ECU. Bryan is slated to compete again at the West Regionals and will look to punch a ticket to Eugene.

Cory Martens and Camp also scored team points for the Shockers. Martens threw a season-best mark of 61.38m/201-4 to take fourth and Camp threw a personal-best mark of 57.64m/189-1 to finish in sixth.

In the 10,000 meters, both Winny Koskei and Try Rios scored team points. Koskei added four points with a fifth-place finish and Rios added a point for the Wichita State men with an eighth-place finish.

The multi events kicked off the day and the Shockers had five athletes start the decathlon and six athletes start the heptathlon.

In the decathlon, Nate Vann and Chonnor Ludolph slotted themselves in the top three after the first day of competition. Vann finished in the top three in all five of the events on the first day. Ludolph finished in the top five in every event, including a win in the shot put.

Sydney Wilson sits in third after the first day of competition. Claudia Rojo and Destiny Masters are in spots 6 and 8 after one day, which would score team points if they can continue their success on Saturday. Masters tied for first in the high jump, clearing 1.70m/5-7.

Prelims took place on the track Friday and Antonio Norman continued his momentum.

Norman won his heat of the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.58. His time qualified him for Sunday's final, but also slotted him at No. 5 in school history in the event. Yuben Goncalves also qualified for Sunday's final, finishing sixth with a time of 52.20.

All four Shocker men that entered the 1,500 meters advanced to Sunday's final. Zack Penrod, Adam Moore, Jed Helker and Bryce Merriman advanced with their performances.

Rebekah Topham and Yazmine Wright earned automatic qualifiers to the women's 1,500-meter final with top-four finishes in their heats.

Claudia Rojo grabbed the final spot in the women's 400-meter hurdles final, taking eighth in 1:00.66.

After the first day, the Wichita State men lead the team race with 50 points and the Shocker women are in third with 18 points.

The Shockers return to action at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. The conclusion of the decathlon and heptathlon will start the day. Select field events begin at 2 p.m. and action on the track starts at 4:25 p.m.
