WICHITA—The Wichita State track and field teams began the weekend with the first day of competition at the Rock Chalk Classic in Lawrence, Kansas.
Director of Cross Country and Track and Field
Steve Rainbolt said the Rock Chalk Classic is a fabulous track meet for the Shockers.
"The competition in all of the events is good and in some of the events it's truly incredible," Rainbolt said. "We are certainly getting some good things accomplished at this really important stage of the season. I think our athletes are excited about gearing up for our first AAC outdoor track and field championship in two years."
On the men's side,
Jed Helker and
Clayton Duchatschek ran top-10 performances in school history. Helker finished third with a time of 14:24.66 and Duchatschek took sixth in 14:28.18. Helker's time puts him at No. 7 all-time and Duchatschek's race slots him at No. 9 on the Shockers' outdoor performance list.
Joakim Genereux had a strong performance in the 200 meters. The freshman ran a time of 21.23, which is just .03 seconds off No. 10 on the Shockers' performance list. Genereuz took third in a field of 30 athletes.
Dowdy Elazarig and
Ethan Toy both had top-10 finishes in the men's long jump. Elazarig took fifth with a mark of 7.43m/24-4.50 and Toy finished in eighth position with a jump of 7.12m/23-4.50.
The Shocker men had four combined top-10 finishes in the javelin and hammer throw.
Michael Bryan and
Cory Martens finished 7-8 in the hammer throw, and
Davis Dubbert and
Cauy Lindsay went 3-6 in the javelin.
On the women's side,
Jacque Darby earned two top-10 finishes. She took third in the long jump with a jump of 5.91m/19-4.75(w) and finished eighth in the 200 meters with a time of 24.00.
Paula Garcia took seventh in front of Darby. She ran a time of 23.94 in the 200 meters, which is the first time she has run under 24 seconds in the event this season.
Destiny Masters took fourth in the women's high jump. She cleared 1.73m/5-8 for a top-five finish and a new personal best.
Yazmine Wright took fifth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:30.49 and
Nicole McMillen took 10th with a personal-best time of 4:35.45.
The Shockers return to action Saturday with the second and final day of the Rock Chalk Classic.
Zack Penrod and
Rebekah Topham will represent the Shockers at the Trials of Miles Kansas City Qualifier on Saturday as well.
